Bordeaux 2019

The Bordeaux 2019 En Primeur Campaign is here. While it’s being held under strange, and strained, global circumstances, the wines we have tasted have impressed with their balance, depth of flavour, precision, and undoubted longevity. The product of a long, dry, warm (but not overbearing) season, these are wines that espouse the best of Bordeaux. The price of the releases remains key, but if correct this is a vintage that you will want in your cellar. Let us be your guide to seeking out the must-buys, and the hidden gems.

2019 Château Batailley, Cru Classé Pauillac

Dry | Red | Still

Château Batailley is an estate that’s incredibly prized by Bordeaux lovers. A fifth growth on Pauillac gravel, it’s a wine that’s worth securing on first release. This, the 2019, comes very highly recommended.

2019 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge, Cru Classé Pessac-Léognan

Dry | Red | Still | 13%

The Graves region is too often overlooked. which has one key benefit for consumers: some of the best value in Bordeaux is to be found here. And this is clear at one of the appellation’s most consistent performers, Domaine de Chevalier is something of a curiosity in Bordeaux. Its name, preceded by Domaine not Château, gives a hint to its more Burgundian style: this is claret in its most elegant, finessed form.

2019 Château Cos d'Estournel, Cru Classé St-Estèphe

Dry | Red | Still | 14.5%

Cos d’Estournel comes from St-Estèphe, just the other side of a stream from Lafite-Rothschild. The last few years have seen a marked change of style here, with a movement towards more elegant, classically styled Bordeaux, rather than the blockbusters of yesteryear. It’s a change that’s paying dividends.

2019 Château Le Boscq, Cru Bourgeois St-Estèphe

Dry | Red | Still

Le Boscq overlooks the Gironde, on a deep gravel bank. It gets better and better: the 2019 might just be the best yet. It’s a wine for the cellar: one that really over delivers.

Young: 2026 - 2040

2019 Château Moulin Haut-Laroque, Fronsac

Dry | Red | Still | 15%

There's plenty of eucalyptus and mint on the nose, here, with richness of fruit on the palate and quite a plush, silky mouthfeel. Fronsac is a warm appellation, and you feel the sun here, but it's impeccably balanced. This is very well done, and will be delicious.

2019 Château Doisy-Daëne, Cru Classé Barsac

Half Sweet | White | Still | 13%

Château Doisy-Daëne is from the commune of Barsac, and is predominantly Sémillon, with a small amount of Sauvignon Blanc. 2019 was a small but perfectly formed vintage here, and the wines dazzle with purity and clarity. It remains one of the great bargains of Bordeaux.

2019 Château Pontet-Canet, Cru Classé Pauillac

Dry | Red | Still

Farmed biodynamically, Pontet-Canet is a much loved Pauillac fifth growth. Bordering Mouton-Rothschild, and run by the charismatic Alfred Tesseron, in 2019 it looks like a smart purchase.

2019 Château Marsau, Côtes des Francs

Dry | Red | Still | 14.5%

Made from a blend of cuve, oak foudres, barrels and amphorae, the 2019 Marsau is stunning. There’s notes of violets and griotte cherries on the nose, and a silky, suave, lively palate that impresses with its depth and energy. The finish is savoury and saline, and lasts an age. This is a stunning showing. Don’t miss it.

Young: 2023 - 2038

2019 Château Robin, Côtes de Castillon

Dry | Red | Still

Plenty of blue fruit on the nose, with an iodine, mineral character. Nice tannins - silky, and good acidity - there's a crunchiness to the fruit here. This is one to watch.

Young: 2023 - 2031

2019 Château Angludet, Cru Bourgeois Margaux

A blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, and 12% Petit Verdot, this will be aged with 50% in Amphorae and 50% in Barrique, with 30% new oak used. It's a return to normal quantities for Angludet, following no production in 2017 and under 10hl/ha in 2018.

Young: 2025 - 2038

2019 Château Tertre de la Mouleyre, St-Emilion Grand Cru

Dry | Red | Still

Tasted from a barrel sample sent to the UK, the 2019 Tertre de la Mouleyre has a beautifully floral, elegant nose. There's a purity here, and depth to the dark fruit. Notes of violets, silky tannins and plenty of crushed rocks on the finish. Beautifully structured and poised, this is classic claret at its zenith. Wonderful.

Young: 2025 - 2045

2019 Château Montaiguillon, Montagne-St-Emilion

Dry | Red | Still

Once again Montaiguillon is punching well above its weight with its 2019. Notes of dark cherries and plums on the nose, with just a hint of oak spice, leads to a palate with good fruit weight and excellent precision. The finish is stony and long, and very mouthwatering. This tastes many times the price.

Young: 2023 - 2032

2019 G de Guiraud, Bordeaux Blanc Sec

Dry | White | Still

Coming from a blend of Sauvignon and Semillon, all farmed organically, the 2019 G de Guiraud is a stunning white Bordeaux. Textured and intense, with lots of energy, it’s a white that will delight from day one, for a few years to come.

2019 Château Palmer, Cru Classé Margaux

Dry | Red | Still

Château Palmer is undoubtedly the greatest property in Margaux, after Château Margaux itself, and in some vintages it makes the greatest wines going in Bordeaux. It has a higher level of merlot in the blend than most wines in Margaux, and this gives it a very specific flavour profile. It’s now farmed biodynamically, with sheep in the vine, and no chemicals used.
