Callie’s back, with rare bottles straight from the cellar
Last year we were thrilled to be joined by winemaker Callie Louw from the superlative South African Syrah producer Porseleinberg, for an evening with four vintages of his wine alongside some top Rhône examples. We are therefore delighted that Callie is returning to London next month and is keen for another evening of fine Syrah and excellent company.
But how to up the ante, we wondered? First of all, we will have a sneak preview taste of the yet-to-be-released 2022 vintage, followed by three back vintages including the legendary 2018, recipient of a 100-point score from Tim Atkin MW. The cherry on top will be a rare look at the 2010 vintage, the first made at Porseleinberg and the wine that helped revolutionise what South African Syrah could be.
Even for the famously taciturn Callie, conversation is always so important at these dinners, and so to add fuel to the fire we will be comparing the Porseleinberg wines alongside fellow Syrahs from around the world, including excellent examples from California, Australia and Côte-Rotie.
And for our meal we will return to a hub of conviviality - The Quality Chop House, where the oval table in the private dining room has now supported countless wine dinners, figuratively and literally.
As before, for any South African wine fans, this is a no-brainer. Come along for what promises to be a very exciting evening.
