An evening with the founding producer of Margaret River
When you ask Australian wine fans to name the region they think has the most consistently high quality across the board, there’s one name that comes up again and again - Margaret River. The West Coast of Australia produces some of the country’s, and the world’s, most excellent Chardonnays and Cabernet Sauvignons, aided by the proximity to the sea and subsequent cooler temperatures.
The first winery to be established in the region was Vasse Felix, and they remain in the very upper echelons of quality for Margaret River, with a string of wonderful vintages dating back to 1971. Chief Winemaker Virginia Willcock has been at Vasse Felix for almost two decades and has built a glowing reputation for the wines, above even the plaudits they had previously enjoyed. Her ability to draw the best from their Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and other vines reflects her philosophy in wine - ‘make the wines you love to drink.’
Next month Virginia will be in London for a small intimate dinner with the Vasse Felix wines, including a very special preview of their top red cuvée - the Tom Cullity, named after the founder of the estate Dr Tom Cullity. The 2021 vintage represents the 50th anniversary of the estate, and will be accompanied by various other vinous treats including 5 different expressions of their Chardonnay. For the dinner we will return to the hidden depths of Noble Rot Mayfair, where good food and conversation is guaranteed. We look forward to seeing you there.
