An exceptional dinner with one of California’s most historic estates
Few wineries in California have a history like Mayacamas. Founded in 1889 by a pickle magnate by the name of John Henry Fisher, the estate saw highs and lows in the following decades. A difficult few years following a severe earthquake in 1906 and then Prohibition which followed, were thankfully overshadowed by the incredible success of Mayacamas at the famous 1976 Judgement of Paris tasting, where its 1971 Cabernet cemented its reputation as one California’s top wineries.
Today the estate has continued to build on this success. The style of the wines has always prioritised elegance and purity of fruit over heavy oak or over-extraction, meaning they hadn’t always found favour with wine critics who had a preference for the latter style. Their subsequent ability to age has paid dividends, and we’re delighted to be able to show some vintages directly from the Mayacamas cellars this evening. Cathy Cohn, Director of Global Sales for Mayacamas, will be there to talk us through these exceptional wines and fascinating stories.
