Dinner with a Cape winemaker who is turning heads
Bernhard Bredell has winemaking in his blood. As a seventh-generation descendant of Bredell wine farmers in Helderberg, Bernhard had supplemented his vinous upbringing with stints in France and Spain, but it was the terroir and history of his home vineyards that proved the most alluring. Now he and his wines are at the very tip of the South African New Wave movement, expressing terroir and old vine intensity with quiet confidence.
In September we are delighted to be joined by him, not just at our South Africa tasting, but for a special dinner the following week, providing an opportunity to hear the stories and taste the wines of Bernhard’s exciting new project - Scions of Sinai. Started in 2017, the wines under the Scions of Sinai label are made in tiny quantities, from old dry-farmed vines, some of which were planted by Bernhard’s grandfather.
We are huge fans of the wines here at Lay & Wheeler - which include concentrated and fine Chenin Blanc, bright and characterful Syrah, and one of the best Pinotages we have ever tasted - elegant and vibrant. Over the course of the evening we will taste all of Bernhard’s single vineyard expressions, along with some older vintages to compare and contrast.
For the dinner we will be taking over the private dining room at Lisboeta, the latest opening from Portuguese wonder-chef Nuno Mendes, who needs little introduction. After his successes at Viajante, Chiltern Firehouse and Mãos, Lisboeta is Mendes’s ‘love letter to Lisbon’, and the reviews have been glowing.

If you can no longer make it, you’re welcome to find a guest to attend in your place - simply share the name of the new attendee with us. If you fail to do so, we’ll do our very best to credit your ticket towards the purchase of future wines, although regrettably, we cannot process credits with less than 48 hours’ notice prior to the start of the event.
