SOUTH AFRICA’S ANSWER TO BURGUNDY
When we had the opportunity to sit down to dinner with Anthony Hamilton Russell, of the pioneering family producing some of the best examples of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in South Africa, we couldn’t say no. Naturally, we asked if a few of our beloved customers could join, and were delighted when he (and his wife Olive) readily agreed.
Anthony’s father, Tim Hamilton Russell, was a trailblazer in South Africa. Buying 170 hectares of prime land in the cool climate Hemel-en-Aarde in 1975, he secured the ultimate land for terroir-driven Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Anthony took the helm in 1991, buying the property by 1994. That same year, he established Southern Right, 448 hectares devoted to Pinotage. In 1996, he then acquired the 64 hectare property Ashbourne, named after his great, great grandfather Lord Ashbourne who was Lord Chancellor of Ireland in the late 1800s. With prime land in three spots across the top region for Pinot and Chardonnay, he remains a trailblazer in South Africa - and indeed, the New World.
Dinner will be an intimate opportunity to get to know Anthony and Olive whilst tasting wines selected to highlight the estate’s strengths.
