2009 Awatea, Te Mata, Hawkes Bay

2009 Awatea, Te Mata, Hawkes Bay

Described by Robert Parker as a ‘stunning wine … a bona fide classic’, this Bordeaux blend consists of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. The nose offers rich, fragrant aromas of blackberries, cassis and petals with soft, savoury cigar-box undertones. Very fresh and focussed, the palate opens up to reveal spicy dark berry fruit complemented by a touch of mint and bay leaf leading to a sustained and peppery finish. This is a full-bodied, muscular wine with tight, velvet tannins and excellent concentration that will continue to evolve in the bottle for at least a decade. Awatea really does give Cru Classé claret a run for its money.
