2016 Les Prés Dieu Extra Brut, Guillaume Sergent

2016 Les Prés Dieu Extra Brut, Guillaume Sergent

100% Chardonnay. Guillaume Sergent is a rising star in the grower Champagne circle, and definitely one to watch. With just 1.5 hectares of vines in the villages of Vrigny and Coulommes, he is able to lavish extreme attention to detail on his wines. He uses oak sensitively, and carries out vinification in 3-7 year old barrels, but resists long ageing in oak. The wine is unfined and unfiltered and has spent a year and a half on its lees in bottle before disgorgement. This is a blend of two vineyards: Les Prés in Vrigny, an east-facing vineyard on sandy soils, and Les Vignes Dieu, a south-facing parcel in Coulommes that has chalky soils. Dosage of just 1g/l.

Tasting notes

Based on the 2016 vintage and disgorged in June 2018 with three grams per liter dosage, Sergent's NV Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Prés Dieu derives from two Montagne de Reims lieux-dits with sandy-chalk soils: northeast-facing Les Prés and south-facing Les Vignes Dieu. Offering up a composed bouquet of citrus oil, fresh peach, wet stones and warm biscuits, the wine is medium to full-bodied, tensile and incisive, with a bracing spine of acidity that lends it incredible precision and carries through the searingly chalky finish. This is a racy, acid-driven and uncompromising Champagne that will delight purists.
