The vines for L’Ermite are right at the top of the Hermitage hill, at an altitude of 200 meters. This means they have a longer growing season, which traditionally gives l’Ermite the most elegance and complex aromatics. Though this is certainly true in 2012, there is an added level of richness to l’Ermite this year, which gives the wine an incredibly seductive style and could easily persuade you to drink this wine long before it is truly ready. The nose is loaded with black fruit and violets, but there is also a meaty note, reminiscent of beef stock. The palate is positively exploding with blackberry fruit, with richness and purity in equal measure. It’s not until you get to the finish, that you notice there is considerable structure lurking in the background. For those lucky enough to own both this wine and the will power to leave it alone, it will be truly special.
