2021 Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz, Penfolds, South Australia

2021 Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz, Penfolds, South Australia

Bin 28 has all the classic hallmarks of rich black fruit, dark chocolate, black pepper and vanilla on the nose and palate. It's rich and textured with mouth-coating, with broad tannins and creamy coconut flavours. An ideal warming red to drink by itself, but incredibly versatile with savoury, black olive notes developing in the background.

Tasting notes

Very concentrated dark purple. High-toned, menthol nose. Very sweet and mellow texture. Very South Australian and satisfying. Long and very comfortable in its own skin. The fruit is well able to stand up to the tannins and there is genuine persistence of flavour. Drink 2023 – 2040. 14.5% alc

A stylish and faithful wine from anywhere and somewhere – this is recipe winemaking at its most alluring, and it manages to capture a brand, vintage, variety and State in perfect suspension in the glass. It is perhaps a little easier on the front end than the back, you don’t need to dive in too quickly, as its abrupt finish will require a couple of years to temper its cautionary tannins. Drink 2026 – 2045. 14.5% alc

The 2021 Bin 28 Shiraz hails from five regions: McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Wrattonbully and Clare Valley. The wine matured for 12 months in American oak (7% new), and this really amplifies the sweet fruit characters in the mouth. It's already nicely integrated aromatically, despite being poured and opened in the same instance (i.e., no preparation prior to tasting), and is redolent with red and purple berry fruit. Spicy, full throttle and loads of tannin in the mouth. Nicely chewy. The first vintage of this wine was in 1959. Drink 2023 – 2035. 14.5% alc
