2017 Barolo Monvigliero Riserva, Castello di Verduno, Piedmont

2017 Barolo Monvigliero Riserva, Castello di Verduno, Piedmont

There’s a lot of freshness to the 2017 Monvigliero Riserva, and also a very silky palate, despite the challenges of the vintage. This has grip and grows on the palate, and there’s notes of sea spray and red fruits, and then some balsamic. Very complex, with time this will blossom into a wonderful wine.

Tasting notes

The 2017 Barolo Riserva Monvigliero is a big, powerful wine. Huge tannins give the 2017 its imposing personality. Red fleshed fruit, chalk, mint, white pepper, rose petal and incense all lend notable freshness and verve. There's not much of the openness that defines so many wines in this vintage. That's probably a good thing for its long-term prospects. There is a touch of elevated volatile acidity that readers will have to accept to fully enjoy the 2017.

Bright, pale garnet. The nose is a little indistinct – though this is 2017… Lots of acidity and rather a shortage of fruit in my view. It doesn’t seem to have done much evolving yet. Rather simple red-fruit flavours so far. A bit stodgy rather than ethereal.
