This is a juicy and fruit-forward Mencia, coming from younger high-altitude vines. Whole bunch fermentation brings a fabulous lift to the wine and the finish is long and finessed. This is extraordinarily fun to drink and is the perfect way to discover the wines of rising star César Márquez.
There's a little more ripeness and concentration in the 2020 Parajes, which matured in well-seasoned (at least fourth use) barriques and a 5,000-liter oak foudre. It's a little rounder and creamier, a more powerful wine (it was bottled 15 days before I tasted it) with a nice Bierzo character. 25,000 bottles produced; this is the volume he wants to produce. It was bottled in late November 2021.
