Cultured, aristocratic, well bred, this is fine saint-julien from a property that can do no wrong. Las Cases is always deeply coloured and concentrated and in 2005 it has produced a majestic wine that will last for a generation and more. However Las Cases is not all about weight and substance for although the palate was quite closed on the day of our visit, deep down there were hints of the wealth of flavours and complexity that will open out in the years to come. Located adjacent to the Saint-Julien/Pauillac boundary, Las Cases can easily be confused as a pauillac - its power, intensity and pencil shaving scent akin to wines across the appellation border. A structured and powerful Las Cases but there is no sign of over-extraction. Richness of fruit tempers a strong framework. A legend in the making from one of Bordeaux' most consistent performers
