2018 Epileptic Inspiration, Blank Bottle

Pieter could never draw – but post epilepsy he can, hence the name. Lovely tension and finesse, a full Semillon, waxy with orange pith and very long and saline. Aged in old oak, one third spend 18 months on lees and another part spent time in amphora.

TASTING NOTES

"There's a huge opportunity with Semillon in South Africa," says Pieter Walser and I fully agree. What a wine this is, marrying grapes from Elgin and Cape Agulhas that are fermented in amphorae and old wood. Pithy, herbal and toasty, it has lanolin and honeysuckle aromas and stony, tangy aftertaste.

Blank Bottle

Pieter Walser conceived Blank Bottle as “an honest wine brand that had no limitations”. Anything is possible here: style of wine, region, and even grape varieties. In any given vintage, he might produce more than 40 individual cuvées, and he estimates that at any moment 50% of his output is a single bottling, never to be recreated. In 2017, he harvested 100 tonnes of grapes from 60 vineyards, spanning 35 varieties. Despite this breadth, his wines are beautifully considered and focused: some of the most exciting we try each year.
