2017 Chenin Blanc / Verdelho, Momento, Western Cape

2017 Chenin Blanc / Verdelho, Momento, Western Cape

This has notes of greengage and honeysuckle, but it’s really all about the texture of this remarkable Chenin, with a drop of Verdelho. Elegant, finessed and long. Bravo.

Tasting notes

One of a pair of brilliant whites from Marelise Niemann in 2018, this marries two-thirds Chenin Blanc from the Swartland and Bot River with one third Verdelho from the Voor Paardeberg. Taut, leesy and well balanced, it's a very harmonious, confident blend of the two grapes, with stone fruit sweetness partnered by zesty acidity.

Momento

Marelise Niemann’s Momento is, for us, one of the Cape’s hidden gems: a producer flying under the radar, but making some of the country’s most exciting wines. She fell in love with Grenache while working in Priorat for Eben Sadie, and she’s now something of an expert on the variety, making Grenache Blanc, Gris, and Noir as three separate bottlings, as well as a brilliant Chenin/Verdelho blend, and a stunning Tinta Barocca. These are wines all about texture and refinement, and with a few years in bottle they really start strutting their stuff.
