The owners of this plot, the Roux family, arrived in South Africa the same year that Chris’s first ancestor did: 1600. These wines were planted in 1936, though the old field selections are most likely from the original genetic material brought to the Cape in the 1600s. So with three centures of selection, here is something unique. It's made from Sauvignon Gris, Rose, Blanc (and every other colour!) from grapes grown 330-360m above sea level, possibly the very best vineyard in Franschhoek. This wine comes from 2 parts of the block: shallow soil at the very top, which gives it its power, and the heart of the mid-slope, giving finesse. There's quite a bit of orange peel on the nose, with impressive depth. There's lovely extract here, with some greengage and tangerine: a wonderful fragrance and fruit character. I love the peach kernel character on the finish and a hint of almonds. This wine is so lean and fine. Chris feels a real responsibility to this vineyard, and he justifies it with this glorious wine.
