This Pinot Noir screams elegance. There are delicate sour berries and violets on the nose, with a gentle mushroomy earthiness on the palate. This could so easily be Burgundian. It’s development will be fascinating, and this could be a future South African classic.
Berene Sauls’ wine is made at Hamilton Russell, where she is a valued member of the export team, but the fruit is sourced from La Vierge, further up the valley. This is a subtle, spicy, mineral-edged Pinot with succulent wild strawberry fruit and a core of tannin.
The 2016 Pinot Noir has a generous bouquet with raspberry coulis, crushed strawberry, wild fennel and a sprig of wild mint. Very attractive. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, the acidity nicely judged to lend a very natural balance. It feels precise, pure and refined with a brisk, mineral-driven finish that lingers in the mouth. This is a worthy follow-up to the superb debut 2015. Go seek.
