2021 Daphne Pinot Noir, The Eyrie Vineyards, Willamette Valley, Oregon

2021 Daphne Pinot Noir, The Eyrie Vineyards, Willamette Valley, Oregon

The Daphne vinyard is a 1.5 acre plot planted to Pommard clones in 1974. This is one of Eyrie's highest vineyard sites and the soils here are shallow. It is beautifully defined, almost too beautiful to drink. With notes of herbal tea, wild cherry, fresh herbs and violets there is a fine, seamless frame to the wine accented with spice and mineral inflections. A sense of purity and restraint here, it is effortless in its elegance.

The Eyrie Vineyards

The story of Pinot pioneers, Eyrie Vineyards, is a truly inspiring one. In 1965, at the tender age of 24, David Lett headed for Oregon. He left California with little more than 3000 grape cuttings and a firm conviction that Oregon’s Willamette Valley would be the best home for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay outside of Burgundy.

In planting their Dundee Hills estate, David and his wife Diana identified the right climatic zone for Pinot Noir, and also selected its most iconic soil: jory, the basalt-based volcanic soil.

This was a true eureka moment in the beginning of the story of quality, cool-climate varieties in the Willamette Valley.
