2010 La Carrière, Chardonnay, Knights Valley, Peter Michael, Napa

All of the Peter Michael vineyards have great elevation, planted onto the steep volcanic slopes of the western face of Mount St. Helena. The La Carriere vineyard is one of the highest sites. Citrus and crunchy white fruits on the nose, leading into a palate that shows immediate freshness and minerality. This is a wine that shows immense drive and an almost linear structure. Ripe lemon fruit, with a hint of white peach leads the core, but this is held in check by a steely framework and very subtle use of oak. Pure and appealing, this is a tightly wound and serious Chardonnay.
