2024 Bin 51 Riesling, Penfolds, South Australia

2024 Bin 51 Riesling, Penfolds, South Australia

Very fresh and flavourful. First impressions are of lemon zest and just squeezed lime juice. The palate has a fleshy, pithy texture with chalky minerality and mouth-watering acidity. At once salivating, inviting and elegant, displaying plenty of volume and power.

Tasting notes

The 2024 Bin 51 Riesling is highly aromatic, with notes of talc and chalk, musk, lilac and white spring flowers (Murraya, orange blossom, lavender). Newly bottled Riesling effortlessly exudes this aromatic capacity, and it almost never has this vivacity and clarity again. Although we all know they gain complexity and breadth as they age. So here, the white rocks, crushed quartz and floral character of the Eden Valley is on full show, and yet the palate has an attractive sudsy softness to it that I find attractive. This is a lovely wine with an impressive flavor draw over the palate that lingers. It has 11% alcohol, a pH of 2.95 and 7.5 grams per liter of total acidity, sealed under screw cap.

Unoaked product of a mild summer and warmer early autumn. Bottled very young. From the Woodbury vineyard planted in the early 1970s. Very pretty nose. Just slightly hard on the end at this very early stage in its evolution, but the fruit is very frank and promising. Hint of grapefruit.

A longer vintage brought a much broader perfume to this very expressive style of Eden Valley Riesling, with more tropical notes, especially passionfruit and guava, dominant above the expected citrus blossom. While the body is tighter that the nose suggests, there is still a viscosity to a fleshy mid-palate that also offers bright sparks of juicy lime. Heavy fruit weight overwhelms the chalky minerality beneath, although a strong acid line draws out a final note of lemon pith that lingers.
