2022 The Steading Blanc, Torbreck, Barossa Valley

2022 The Steading Blanc, Torbreck, Barossa Valley

This is mainly Roussanne and Marsanne, with the Viognier dialled back in recent vintages to provide just enough aromatic intensity and viscocity, without dominating. Full of ripe peach and apricot, with a pithy feel to the texture, and a core of more juicy fruit. The fruit character is just sweet enough to carry it through a long finish with more pithy, savoury notes. Don't make the mistake of ignoring the brilliant white wines from Torbreck.

Tasting notes

Like the Cuvée Juvenile Blanc, this 2022 The Steading Blanc is Roussanne-led (50%), followed by Marsanne (43%) and Viognier (7%). While the Roussanne went straight to tank (i.e., no oak), the Marsanne and Viognier were fermented and matured in seasoned French oak. That is undoubtedly what brings the softness to the middle palate, while the Roussanne contributes white flowers and chalk to the perimeters. There is also green apple (skin), loquat, lychee, white plum and nashi pear. This is lovely, complex, plush and laden with white pepper through the finish. The phenolics have a firmness to them—very attractive in a white wine.

If Juveniles Blanc is a young ‘Luke’, this wine is a ‘Jedi Master’. Focussing on Roussanne, Marsanne and Viognier, this is a spellbinding white wine and the finest white to date from this winery. With incredible poise and a downright sexy deportment, The Steading Blanc shows mind-blowing refinement and definition. At a seventh of the price of Châteauneuf-du-Pape Beaucastel Blanc and a full 1% lower in alcohol, this wine redefines what is possible from the timeless RMV blend. Yet, with remorseless climate creep impacting the Rhône more than anywhere I can think of, The Steading Blanc reminds me of great Southern Rhône whites from a bygone era but with more flair, professionalism, fruit clarity and drinkability.

2021 Cuvée Juveniles, Torbreck, Barossa Valley Dry | Red | Still | 14.5%

This Rhone blend now contains some Counoise to create bright acidity, and Carignan, which adds soft black fruit character. This has beautiful aromatic black fruit, and a lifted herbal complexity. This wine is all about softness and generosity, not structure. There's a velvet texture and bright, ripe fruit on the finish.

2020 The Steading, Torbreck, Barossa Valley Red | Still | 15%

The high proportion of Grenache in this vintage, at 65%, gives a beautiful fresh red fruit character, but there are plenty of darker fruits, richness and broad tannins from the Shiraz and Mataro. Delicious now with a long juicy finish, this is a great buy.

2019 The Factor, Torbreck, Barossa Valley Red | Still | 15%

Torbreck's classic and traditional Barossa Shiraz. Very dark fruit profile with soy, coffee, dark chocolate and star anise. This has 2 years in 50% new French oak barriques. This drought vintage in particular is textural and grippy on the palate. This has an earthy, iron-rich feel to it, almost Hermitage-esque.
