Tasting notes

The 2021 The Steading is incredibly sweet on the nose: summer raspberries, blood plums, black cherry, licorice, star anise, some cardamom and chewing tobacco. This offers insane value for money, at around $40AUD, but then, I feel like it has been that price for at least a decade, so it has been an insane value for a long time. This is reliable, delicious, complex, plush/generous and, through the lens of this lovely cool vintage, a superstar. The best yet.

The Steading (Rouge) is the ravishing Blanc’s perfectly balanced, mirror-image relation. 2021 is most definitely a sleeper vintage for this imperious and staggeringly good-value GSM hero. With this possesses a more chiselled figure than the deliciously forward 2020 vintage (which is currently enjoying rave reviews on my 100 Best UK Roadshow), this is two shades darker, more luxurious, centred and calm, and it reeks of couture treatment from its tip to its toe. Beautiful.

2021 Cuvée Juveniles, Torbreck, Barossa Valley Dry | Red | Still | 14.5%

This Rhone blend now contains some Counoise to create bright acidity, and Carignan, which adds soft black fruit character. This has beautiful aromatic black fruit, and a lifted herbal complexity. This wine is all about softness and generosity, not structure. There's a velvet texture and bright, ripe fruit on the finish.

2023 The Struie, Torbreck, Barossa Valley Red | Still | 14%

The nose is vibrant with aromas of blueberry, mulberry, blackberry, and black plum, harmoniously integrated with notes of graphite, sandalwood, liquorice, and dark cocoa. The palate is inviting and plush, showcasing black and blue fruits complemented by soft, rounded tannins. The interplay of fruit and acidity creates a beautifully textured mouthfeel, devoid of any harshness or bitterness. This wine is a genuine delight, promising enjoyment for many years to come.

Ready: 2025 - 2037
2019 The Factor, Torbreck, Barossa Valley Red | Still | 15%

Torbreck's classic and traditional Barossa Shiraz. Very dark fruit profile with soy, coffee, dark chocolate and star anise. This has 2 years in 50% new French oak barriques. This drought vintage in particular is textural and grippy on the palate. This has an earthy, iron-rich feel to it, almost Hermitage-esque.

Ready: 2025 - 2045
