"Outstanding – once again. I laughed when the barrel sample of 2007 Essencia “glooped” into my glass. There are not many wines that do that. Nosing the wine, it has a heady bouquet of honey, molasses, orange blossom and Japanese plum. The palate redefines unctuousness – in fact, it is almost over-powering at the moment, with intense honey, orange zest and marmalade. It clings to the mouth and threatens to make everything that you ingest henceforth taste of Essencia. It is as utterly ridiculous as it is utterly profound."

If you were to design a spot for growing world class sweet wines, you’d almost certainly come up with something that looks a lot like Hungary’s Tokaji region. Here, two rivers combine, creating the perfect conditions for the development of noble rot, while warm summer winds off the plain encourage ripening, and the Zemplén mountains offer protection to the vineyards. Founded in 1990, by a group of local growers and international investors, who, in the shadow of the end of Communism in Hungary, wanted to return Tokaji to its rightful place among sweet wines, The Royal Tokaji Company is a producer that has gone from strength to strength over the last thirty years.
