TASTING NOTES

Angelo Gaja and his daughter Gaia Gaja don't make Bolgheri Superiore wines, although this wine qualifies as such. The 2013 Bolgheri Rosso Camarcanda shows the pedigree of the vintage and the importance this top shelf wine deserves. This is an exceptional blend of Merlot with Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc that is challenging to taste next to the 2014 Magari, which is so radically different. Camarcanda reveals Gaja's signature touch with full and generous fruit layers that are backed by spice, leather, tobacco and lovely succulence. The wine is integrated and smooth with long-lasting flavors and beautiful tannin management. Despite its heft, the wine is elegant and silky through and through.

Mid crimson. Nose bursting with cherry fruit laced with oak and not in the slightest bit like bordeaux. With aeration, just a hint of capsicum betraying the two Cabernet components. Very fresh, lifted and juicy and with firm tannins. Almost a little vibrant and already hard to resist, but I would put this away for a couple of years.

Gaja

If one estate defines Barbaresco, it’s Gaja. It’s the oldest winery in the DOC, founded in 1859. But it’s the extravagant Angelo Gaja who really put the estate on the map, and Barbaresco itself. 1967 was the first vintage of his ‘Sori’ bottlings: he was one of the pioneers of single vineyard wines in Italy. The results speak for themselves, and the influence of his daughter Gaia Gaja who’s come on board: these wines routinely score among the highest for the entire region.
