2011 Poggio alle Gazze, dell'Ornellaia, Tuscany

The only white wine made by Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, this is a beautifully expressive blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier – the latter making up only a subtle 7% of the blend. Notes of soft white stone fruit on the nose and palate, ripe apricots, white peach and the merest hint of tropical honeydew melon, all this balanced by a mouth-watering vein of citrus. Seamless, silky-textured and undeniably fine.


“The 2011 Poggio alle Gazze is the most gorgeous version of this wine I have tasted in some years since this wine was re-introduced commercially in 2008. Intensely varietal, the 2011 is vivid and wonderfully alive in the glass. Sage, tomato leaf, crushed rocks and peaches all meld together in a wine of exceptional class. Over time, the generous quality of the vintage comes through as the wine fleshes out beautifully. The 2011 includes a dollop of Viognier. The coast of Tuscany is hardly the ideal place to make aromatic whites, but Ornellaia has done a fabulous job with their Poggio alle Gazze.”
