2007 Barbaresco San Stefanetto, Piero Busso, Piedmont

Labelled as San Stunet in the local language, the San Steffanato vineyard is a mixture of chalk and clay soil. The resulting wine (just 5,800 bottles) is perhaps less austere than the Borgese, but shares similar appetising acidity, with a sweet core or ripe fruit. 30% of the production is aged in barriques, which gives a gentle gloss of oak.

Piero Busso

Started in 1953, Piero Busso has always been a family affair. Piero remains in charge, but he’s joined by his son Pierguido, wife Lucia, and daughter Emanuela. They’re as delightful a family as you’d hope to meet, with charm that seems to influence their wines. They aim for every wine to be as recognisable and individual as possible. This approach works wonders, without following fads or trends. They’re some of the most individual, expressive wines we’ve discovered.
