2004 A Sirio, Sangervasio,Toscana
The wine does not have a fantasy name and it is very modestly priced for what it is, but it does get high scores in tastings. So on one count it is a Super-Tuscan, but it is the other two parameters that ensure its inclusion in this offer: greatness and value.
A high quality wine made from Sangiovese and just 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. It has superb depth of colour, with intense wild raspberry and blackberry elements to the bouquet. Stone fruit, tobacco and spice notes also contribute to the complexity. The texture on the palate is full, soft and round with the tannic backbone hidden beneath the richness of the fruit. This has soft oak and a supple style from ageing in barrique but, beyond this, there is considerable structure and finely crafted tannins. Lovely balance. This is the best A Sirio we have tasted.
