2001 Barolo, Monprivato, Mauro Mascarello, Castiglione Falleto, Piedmont

Still relatively pale in colour. The fragrant, complex nose is closed at first but after about 10 minutes reveals red and black fruits plus violets and a hint of rose. Great intensity of refined, sweet fruit is present on the palate. This has a beautiful, silky texture, flowing and seamless on the palate. Good tannins but they are absolutely in tune with the fruit with a long, totally balanced finish. There is almost a lacy quality and restraint to this wine, despite its undeniable power. This outstanding wine is a masterclass in traditional Barolo and comes with the highest recommendation to buy.

2001 Barolo, Monprivato, Mauro Mascarello, Castiglione Falleto, Piedmont
Giuseppe e Figlio Mascarello

The winemaking story of Mascarello started at the turn of the century when the original Giuseppe Mascarello first produced top Nebbiolo-based wines. The estate has passed from father to son ever since. Current winemaker Mauro Mascarello has lifted it to the top table of Piedmontese producers, with wines particularly prized for their clarity and precision. He uses the best grapes, from vines up to 300 years old, and takes his time to ensure nothing is rushed in the pursuit of perfection.
