2021 Malvasia Volcanico, Tameran, Gran Canaria

2021 Malvasia Volcanico, Tameran, Gran Canaria

BodegasTamerán was set up in 2019 by footballer and Canary Islands native, David Silva after a much sought after 6 hectare vineyard became available on the island. He asked friend Jonathan García (owner and winemaker at Suertes del Marqués) to run the project and the wines have since gained much praise. This white wine comes from the volcanic archipelago of Gran Canaria. Vines are planted on their own roots at altitudes of 600-700 metres on mountainous plots benefitting from a cooling Atlantic influence and sandy, volcanic soils on exclusively south facing slopes.Malvasía Volcánica is a cross of Malvasía Aromática and Marmajuelo. Expect beautiful aromatic and exotic aromas to combine pink grapefruit and citrus notes. The palate is very saline and mineral, a nod to the vineyard soils and proximity to the sea.

This wine is now sold out. Please get in touch with your advisor or one of our team on [email protected] or 01473 313 300 for more information or guidance on an alternative.

Bodegas Tamerán

Bodegas Tamerán is quickly building a reputation as one of the finest producers on Gran Canaria for their unique, single-variety white wines. The estate was set up in 2019 by footballer and Canary Island native, David Silva. He met winemaker Jonathan Garcia, and enjoyed his wines so much that he became friends and subsequently business partners with him. Together, they set out to make wines which embodied the unique terroir, climate and character of the island. They purchased 6 hectares of vineyards at 600 to 700 metres above sea level, on south-facing volcanic slopes typical of Gran Canaria. They organically farm native grape varieties including Verdello, Marmajuelo, Baboso Blanco, Vijariego Blanco, Malvasía Aromática, Malvasía Volcánica and Vijariego Negro, which are bottled varietally. Everything in the vineyard is done by hand and once harvested, grapes are treated gently, with minimal intervention, native yeasts and left to mature on the lees in large neutral oak barrels. Their wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. These are mineral, refreshing examples of the quality of wines emerging from Gran Canaria and are well-worth seeking out.
