2020 Sufreiral, César Márquez, Bierzo

2020 Sufreiral, César Márquez, Bierzo

This single vineyard wine is home to 100 year old+ vines and is made up of 85% Mencia, 10% Alicante Bouschet and a field blend of white grapes. Sufreiral is a 2 hectare mountainous plot with a south west exposition in the town of Toral in the Bierzo DO. With 40% whole bunch giving the wine a floral lift, it is the unique decomposed limestone that is credited for this wine's linear core and mineral profile. Bright red cherry and raspberry fruits combine with liquorice and gravel notes, with a blood orange note that persists on the finish. The tannins are chalky and well integrated, the wine has a finesse and silkiness that is very inviting.

Tasting notes

The 2020 Sufreiral feels extremely harmonious. It's a single-vineyard wine from one 500-liter barrel and one 600-liter barrel, fermented with less stems (20%) and a slightly shorter maceration, looking for more elegance and balance and to compensate for the warmer year. He used all of the white grapes from the field blend found in the vineyard, and the wine kept the moderate alcohol, the freshness and acidity and has a little more concentration of chalky tannins that give it a nice texture. 1,100 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2021.
