2012 Alión, Vega-Sicilia, Ribera del Duero

This is such a pure expression of Tempranillo, with richness and ripeness but still a little restraint on the nose. The palate is concentrated and brambly, but there is masterful balance at work: such is the freshness that has been locked-in, it seems almost cool in the mouth. Flavours of plum, sweet oak and store-cupboard spice unfurl with a beautifully weighted texture. This is riveting Ribera at its very best.

2012 Alión, Vega-Sicilia, Ribera del Duero

Vega Sicilia is to Spain what the First Growths are to France. Its story is well known - a Spanish winemaker trained in Bordeaux and returned to his homeland with a few vines to blend with the local Tempranillo. The flagship wine, Unico, marks the first time Bordeaux varieties were used in Ribera del Duero. They also produce a second wine, Valbuena 5°, so-called because it’s kept in the cellar for 5 years before release, and stablemates Pintia and Alion.
