2010 Valbuena 5th, Vega-Sicilia, Ribera del Duero

“2010 seems to have the exuberance of the 2011 and the seriousness and elegance of 2009. It has the Burgundian philosophy of terroir, with all plots fermented and aged separately, giving each vineyard what it needs in terms of vinification and elevage resulting in something like 40 separate lots to blend. This wine has gained in precision and sharpness, and is very pure with delineated aromas and flavors. It is a world-class wine, possibly the best Valbuena ever.”

2010 Valbuena 5th, Vega-Sicilia, Ribera del Duero

Vega Sicilia is to Spain what the First Growths are to France. Its story is well known - a Spanish winemaker trained in Bordeaux and returned to his homeland with a few vines to blend with the local Tempranillo. The flagship wine, Unico, marks the first time Bordeaux varieties were used in Ribera del Duero. They also produce a second wine, Valbuena 5°, so-called because it’s kept in the cellar for 5 years before release, and stablemates Pintia and Alion.
