2001 Viña Real Gran Reserva, CVNE, Rioja
The Alavesa region of Rioja experienced a dramatic surge of ripening in the days leading up to the harvest, and this is perhaps at the core of this remarkable vintage. Grape sugars (and hence alcohol) rose to gratifying levels in a short time, yet the natural fruit acidity (so important for longevity) was not lost. In estate director Jesus Madrazo's words, 'a miraculous vintage!' 2001 Viña Real Gran Reserva offers an immediate impression of sweetness; of cherries, berries and plum. It is expansive and expressive, a multi-dimensional wine with oak, fruit and tannins in harmony. The result is a wine of strength and balance, ripe but not jammy and potent but not apparently alcoholic. A very fine rioja which positively demands attention.
