2016 Rüdesheimer Rosengarten, Grosses Gewächs Riesling, Leitz

From a tiny plot in the centre of Rudesheim, this beautiful walled vineyard produces a stunning, generous Riesling. There's a sense of ripeness here, with notes of lemon oil and pineapple pith, all supported with fresh herbs and spices, with coriander and ginger in abundance. Gorgeously lifted, with Johannes' benchmark laser acidity, it's a wine that already gives huge pleasure, but that will have a remarkable potential for aging.

2016 Rüdesheimer Rosengarten, Grosses Gewächs Riesling, Leitz
Weingut Leitz

Johannes Leitz is perhaps best known for his tiny 1.2 hectare monopole Rüdesheimer Rosengarten GG (Grosses Gewächs, i.e.Grand Cru) in the heart of the Rheingau. He’s based in Rüdesheim, a picturesque town on the bank of the Rhine river, and Rosengarten is its oldest vineyard, planted since the ninth century. Leitz has grown the concern from 2 hectares to over forty since taking over from his father in 1985, bringing international renown for the winery along the way, deservedly so.
