2019 Pettenthal Riesling Grosses Gewächs, Gunderloch, Rheinhessen

The 2019 Pettenthal is open and ready to go on the nose, with notes of ripe peach and yellow fruit, greengage and lots of floral lift. The palate is rather more restrained, with a slight bitterness and lovely acidity, making the mouth water. The complexity here is remarkable. And with some time in bottle, it will only get better and better and better.

2019 Pettenthal Riesling Grosses Gewächs, Gunderloch, Rheinhessen
Weingut Gunderloch

Johannes Hasselbach took over the family domaine (which bears the name of its 1890 founder, Carl Gunderloch) a few years ago, with his father Fritz moving into the background, but remaining ever-present to help his son. This sixth generation winemaker has had sole responsibility since Fritz sadly passed away in December 2016, so 2017 is Johannes’ first vintage flying solo. And he’s produced a remarkable range of wines in their smart corner of Gunderloch. Sharing many plots with the famous Weingut Keller, whose wines sell for many times the price, Gunderloch offers access to this great terroir, without the price tag.
