2011 Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg 'Türmchen', Riesling Spätlese, Dönnhoff, Nahe

The great wines of Dönnhoff need no introduction to lovers of German Riesling; their wines are a masterclass in terroir expression and elegance. If you haven’t yet developed a penchant for the German varietal, then this may be your downfall as it is sublime. Deliciousness aside for a moment, time for a quick German lesson: Türmchen, meaning Little (chen) Tower (Türm), refers to the picturesque folly straddling the upper echelons of the Felsenberg vineyard, a term often contracted by Dönnhoff to simply, ‘FelsenTürmchen’. The volcanic cliff face behind radiates heat back onto the vineyard, resulting in fantastic concentration, not to mention how great the Grand Cru vineyard is in its own right.
Captivatingly fragrant on the nose, with golden notes of peach, honey, minerals and lime leaves. The palate is intense and concentrated, with vibrant citrus characters combined with nectarine acacia honey. The finish on this is mineral and pure – fruity rather than sweet – with notes of candied citrus and crushed stone and balancing acidity.
