2016 Domaine de l'Horizon Rouge, Côtes Catalanes

2016 Domaine de l'Horizon Rouge, Côtes Catalanes

At just 12.5% abv, translucent in colour, and with a peppery, herby freshness on the nose, this might not be what springs to mind for the warm climes of the south. The palate has that sweet, silky flow of sun ripened fruit, so that it manages to be both restrained and indulgent all at once. The altitude of the Côtes Catalanes are the secret to this style. Tiny volumes mean this has remained a well-kept secret. It is well worth discovering.

Domaine de l'Horizon

Thomas Tiebert established this domaine in 2006 in the tiny village of Calce, deep in the Catalan landscape of the Pyrenees as France blends into Spain. He bought 17 hectares of old vines that cling to a rocky, windswept hillside overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The domaine has a fairly natural leaning, cultivating tiny yields of indiginous varieties including Carignan, Grenache, Macabeu and Grenache Gris, and using low-intervention practices in the cellar. Dramatic wines from a dramatic landscape.
