2005 Coteaux du Layon, Moulin Touchais

Here’s one of the stars of the Loire Valley, a property that has been in the Touchais family for eight generations, since 1787. Moulin Touchais is famous for the late releases of their wine, demanding cellarage for ten years before a bottle leaves the property. Their success with the Chenin Blanc grape, one of the two famous white grapes of the Loire (the other Sauvignon Blanc), leads to a crisp, honeyed wine with notes of peach and straw on the nose -- and it’s sweet, but not cloying.

Moulin Touchais

This property has been in the Touchais family for eight generations, since 1787, and the estate, down a side street in Doué-La-Fontaine, has many stories to tell. Indeed, the labyrinth of cellars was bricked over during the occupation of France during World War Two, to protect the years of stock. Moulin Touchais is famous for the late releases of their wine, demanding cellarage for at least ten years before a bottle leaves the property.
