2019 Riesling Grand Cru Sommerberg, Albert Boxler

Sommerberg is the steep 19 hectare grand cru hillside that rises up behind the village of Niedermorschwihr, where the Boxler cellar is located. Indeed, Sommerberg is synonymous with Boxler, and this wine is the most famous and celebrated iteration of the vineyard. It typically has drive and tension, and the 2019 expresses this through some dazzling fresh fruit notes - apples, pears and even a touch of lychee. But beyond the aromatic profile, it is the structure and poise of this wine that marks it out as grand cru. There is a smoothness - a silkiness - walking alongside the fresh energy natural to the Riesling variety in Jean Boxler’s 2019s that is quite remarkable. Sommerberg is a superb example of this beguiling combination.

2019 Riesling Grand Cru Sommerberg, Albert Boxler
Albert Boxler

With vines in the key Grands Crus Sommerberg and Brand, it’s no wonder Boxler is one of the most respected names in Alsace. In the area since 1673, history and family are omnipresent here: incumbent Jean Boxler’s grandfather assumed responsibility after World War II, and his cousin designed the label that same year, in 1946. Based in Niedermorschwihr, Jean and his family vinify parcels within each cru separately, for precise, vintage-driven wines which age better than any.
