2014 La Montagne Blanc, Saint Jean du Barroux, Ventoux

This is a tightly wound white, but with air it gets better and better. It’s almost volcanic in style: it reminds a little of Etna, but with real precision and length. At six years old, this is a delight.

Saint Jean du Barroux

Philippe Gimel, the enthusiastic winemaker here, is an ex-chemist who first worked at top names such as Château de Beaucastel in the Southern Rhône and Château Pierre Bise in the Loire. With outstanding experience, he sought out pristine terroir where he could discover the land’s potential for himself. His winery, which takes its name from the street (Chemin de St Jean) and the local village (Le Barroux) and has just been relocated to an exciting new space in nearby Malucène, offers some of the most pure expressions of the Côtes du Ventoux - plush and modern in their own way, and simply delightful to drink.
