2016 Côtes du Rhône Lieu-dit Clavin, Domaine de la Vieille Julienne

From vines just the wrong side of the Châteauneuf boundary, this is the wine Jean-Paul drinks at home. Beautiful nose, complex and serious with amazing intensity. Lovely tannins and power, long and herbal, with so much texture. Amazing drive and finesse. Some vines predate 1905, when the Daumen family bought the domaine.

Domaine de la Vieille Julienne

One of the most compelling winemakers in the region, the gentle Jean-Paul Daumen has a philosophy of winemaking akin to an artist. Jean-Paul converted the property, which had been in the family since 1905, to biodynamic practices in 1998. His attention to detail and passion for his vines could not be more obvious after just a few minutes in his company. Almost Burgundian in style, here is Grenache winemaking par excellence, right next door to the legendary Château Rayas. They release a year later than other producers.
