2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Trois Sources, Domaine de la Vieille Julienne

This is quite elegant and fine, with beautiful definition and delicacy and purity of dark fruit. Nice tapenade and impressive, silky depth and tannins. Mineral and long. 60% Grenache, under 10% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre, 10% Counoise. Very spicy and profound.

TASTING NOTES

The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Trois Sources is straight-up sensational and isn’t far off the more expensive Reserve cuvée in style and quality. Huge notes of blackcurrants, black raspberries, crushed violets, licorice, and incredible minerality, as well as a smoking floral quality, all soar from the glass of this full-bodied, seamless, pure wine that readers should snatch up. With good acidity, awesome purity, and a great, great finish, it's an incredible wine any way you look at it. Drink it anytime over the coming two decades or more.

Domaine de la Vieille Julienne

One of the most compelling winemakers in the region, the gentle Jean-Paul Daumen has a philosophy of winemaking akin to an artist. Jean-Paul converted the property, which had been in the family since 1905, to biodynamic practices in 1998. His attention to detail and passion for his vines could not be more obvious after just a few minutes in his company. Almost Burgundian in style, here is Grenache winemaking par excellence, right next door to the legendary Château Rayas. They release a year later than other producers.
