2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservé, Domaine de la Vieille Julienne

This is made from old Grenache, first planted from Massal selection, dating back to 1905-1906. On tasting it was both deep and closed, but with wonderful purity. Fine and long and silky, saline tannins which are long, and amazingly rendered. So much energy. Quite tapenade and also herbs and flowers. Very complex. It’s 90-95% Grenache, with a touch of Counoise, Syrah and Cinsault. Very impressive.

Domaine de la Vieille Julienne

One of the most compelling winemakers in the region, the gentle Jean-Paul Daumen has a philosophy of winemaking akin to an artist. Jean-Paul converted the property, which had been in the family since 1905, to biodynamic practices in 1998. His attention to detail and passion for his vines could not be more obvious after just a few minutes in his company. Almost Burgundian in style, here is Grenache winemaking par excellence, right next door to the legendary Château Rayas. They release a year later than other producers.
