Brooding, with exotic spice and darker fruit, the 2015 Rochins shows Syrah’s more masculine side. This is a complex, intense, structured wine: one for the long haul.
The single-vineyard 2015 Côte Rôtie les Rochins comes from schist soils just up the slope from the La Landonne lieu-dit. Mostly destemmed and aged in 40% new French oak, it offers full-bodied notes of blackberry and cassis, impressive purity of fruit, fine tannin and a lengthy finish. There’s certainly a modern slant here, but it has a wealth of fruit and its oak component is pushed into the background. Forget bottles for 4-5 years.
