2012 Ermitage Le Pavillon, M. Chapoutier

Le Pavillon is produced from 60 year old vines and made in tiny quantities, with incredibly low yields. It is the most serious and complex of Chapoutier’s single-vineyard Ermitage wines and a wine that demands considerable cellaring to unlock its considerable potential. The nose is relatively closed, but gives hints of blackberry, violets and pepper. The palate is dark, hugely concentrated and brooding with potential. The fruit is certainly there, but is currently hiding behind the wine’s considerable structure; it is hugely tannic, but the tannins are so fine that it is not difficult to taste – it’s like liquid silk! The length, and complexity of this wine are astonishing, but it will take a good decade to begin to unlock this wine’s considerable potential.

2012 Ermitage Le Pavillon, M. Chapoutier
M. Chapoutier

The name Chapoutier has long been associated with the northern Rhône thanks to the calibre of their plots around the region, but it was only once Michel Chapoutier took control of the family business in 1988 that quality accelerated it to become the world-class concern it is today. Michel Chapoutier is undoubtedly one of the greatest winemakers of our time, and has successfully extended his business to include vineyards in the Roussillon, Alsace and Australia. But his Northern Rhône Syrahs and Marsannes of exquisite quality remain the main attraction.
