2011 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Deus Ex Machina, Clos St. Jean

Deux ex Machina refers to a plot device used in Greek and Roman drama, whereby a god is introduced by means of a large crane to resolve an improbable plot-line or problem. At Clos St Jean, the name reflects the huge changes that have taken place at the estate since 2002-2003. If La Combe des Fous offered a feminine style, with Deus Ex Machina we have the masculine counterpart. 60% Grenache, 40% Mouvèrdre. The aromatics are in abundance, with notes of thyme, mint, blackberry leaf and dark cherries. Sweet fruit in the mouth, this has fantastic ripe, rich and concentrated black cherries, cassis and victoria plum, followed by liquorice, roasted meat and coffee. The complexity is just amazing, unfolding into layers of intense savoury flavours and almost-endless length. Outstanding and extraordinarily beautiful.
