2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel

2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel

Tasted from a pre-assemblage blend with the Grenache accounting for the greater proportion, with supporting Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Counoise. This is deep in colour, with aromas suggestive of juicy, ripe red fruits; blueberry and black cherry with curranty accents too. Mouthfilling on the palate, with a layered intense fruit, both spicy and deeply wound. Garrigue-like, Provençal herb characters add interest to the spicy weave of fruit. The finely-expressed tannins seem ever present but are far from overly assertive. There is an added sense of ripeness here, with an almost dried fruit hint to the finish, but this only adds interest, the overall impression is one of restrained richness and elegance.
