2003 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel

2003 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Château de Beaucastel

François Perrin is justifiably euphoric over the quality of 2003 Château de Beaucastel, having missed out on making a cuvée at all in 2002. We tasted each individual varietal cuvée separately; Syrah, Counoise, Grenache and Mourvèdre. The Syrah has been carefully selected for its structure and direction. The Grenache is beautifully opulent and full of ripe, luscious fruit, whilst the Mourvèdre – a trump card here – contributes a rich power, with its dense chocolate flavours and intense cherry stone tannins. The final component is the outstanding Counoise, providing a delicious balance of elegance and a lovely earthiness on the finish. The combination of the four creates a superbly complex Château de Beaucastel with power and longevity. Sadly yields are down dramatically so allocations this year are even smaller than ever.
