2022 Morgon, Côte du Py, Jean Foillard
From vines with an average age of 60-years-old, with some as old as 100, grown on the slopes of one of the most famous vineyards in Beaujolais, the extinct volcano that is the “Côte du Puy” in Morgon. The soil here is a mixture of schist - lending mineral notes to the wine and granite - lending spicy notes. This cuvée is aged for around 9 months in used oak barrels and is bottled unfiltered, unfined and with minimal sulphur. Incredibly complex and attractive on the nose, red cherry, blackberry, spice, faint hints of lavender, rosemary and earthiness. This is layered and textural, with a haunting energy and purity to the piquant, peppery red fruit. An impressive core of acidity keeps it fresh, integrating skilfully with the fine-grained tannins. The finish is long, saline and incredibly mineral. Delicious today, but don’t be afraid to age this.
