2014 Pouilly-Loché Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Marcel Couturier

Old vines give richness, but the wine maintains zingy acidity and is perfectly balanced as a result. There is a slight struck-match reductive quality to the palate, with the weight and textured mouthfeel that seems to the be the calling card of Marcel’s 2014s. The best example of this we’ve tasted.

2014 Pouilly-Loché Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Marcel Couturier
Domaine Marcel Couturier

Coming from a family more concerned with growing cereals and raising cattle (although they did own vines), Marcel Couturier’s future in wine seemed distant when he was young. After working for an uncle with a small domaine, he started bottling his own wines in 2005. He now owns about 10 hectares, and the results are impressive. Crisp and pure, they show the potential of the Mâconnais for wines to rival their northern neighbours. At prices like this, they make perfect everyday Chardonnays.
